AFC in Practice: How to Be a Better Financial Crime Investigator

Matt is the Director of U.S. Bank’s Special Investigations Unit, where he leads teams focused on complex and significant financial crimes investigations, emerging risk and trend analysis, and law enforcement engagement. Prior to this role, he served as Director of Fraud Investigations.

Before joining U.S. Bank, Matt spent several years at Citibank. He began his tenure in Citi’s Global Investigation Unit, focusing on large‑scale money laundering investigations. He later joined Citi’s Corporate Security and Investigative Services (CSIS), where he built and led the High Risk Unit, which was responsible for investigating Citi’s most sensitive cases, including insider abuse and large‑scale fraud.

Earlier in his career, Matt served as an Intelligence Analyst with the Federal Bureau of Investigation and as an Assistant State Attorney.

Matt holds a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from Northeastern University and a Juris Doctor from Nova Southeastern University.

Heidi Wilder is a Lead Blockchain Security Researcher on Unit 0x at Coinbase. Her work focuses on identifying and mitigating potential blockchain security threats both internally and externally.

Before starting work on the Security side, Heidi was a Manager for Special Investigations at Coinbase. Her work primarily concentrated on combating terror funding campaigns, sanctions evasion, and large-scale money laundering networks, among other major risk areas.

Prior to joining Coinbase, Heidi led a Crypto Intelligence team at the blockchain intelligence company Elliptic in London. While at Elliptic, she oversaw the team responsible for collecting, assessing, and analyzing data that sustained the Elliptic suite of tools. Before entering the cryptocurrency space, Heidi was an Associate at PwC’s Global Intelligence practice where she worked on numerous private and public sector engagements.

Heidi received a master’s degree in public policy and a bachelor’s degree in economics from the University of Virginia.
